Marijke De Schepper

Marijke De Schepper

Marijke De Schepper is a Belgian born photographer and film maker based in Amsterdam. Her film productions include many informative and documentary programs with special mention of her work for National Geographic Channel International which was broadcasted globally.. Inspired by her many travels abroad, Marijke started to focus more and more on photography. She felt challenged by capturing a story in just one single shot instead of a moving image. After two decades of film production she decided to pursue her photography passion and started studying at the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam. In December 2017 she graduated. She was selected New Dutch Photography Talent 2018 by GUP. That year her work was featured on the cover of the accompanying book. She now works as an independent photographer, specialising in portrait and fine art photography.

‘Whether shooting people or elements of nature, I search for poetry, for softness, for aesthetics. I prefer to make them stand out, to transform them, to turn vulnerability into strength so pride and radiance reveals. Nature does that independently. I just have to tune in and look delicately for the right angle, a distinctive presence of light or maybe a gentle breeze. People I have to guide by keeping the right balance between talking, listening and being silent, by giving confidence and by gaining trust. I guess this is where my background in psychology comes in.

I love to meet and portray people. And I have a passion for capturing poetic moments while wandering through nature.. Becoming a professional photographer I always had the idea that I had to choose between them. People or nature? People or nature? But finally I came to the conclusion that choosing between them is.not an option. They are both essential to my photography.’

Besides working as a solo photographer, Marijke forms a creative duo APITULEY & DE SCHEPPER with Charlotte Apituley. In addition to commissioned portrait work, they initiate visual projects in its broadest sense. A&DS photo magazine - a limited edition photo art book featuring international photographic talent - is a great example of it.
